Bridging IT and OT to build a secure and resilient industrial environment

A global manufacturing company launched an IT/OT transformation initiative to strengthen its industrial cybersecurity posture, modernise its infrastructure, and improve the reliability of operational systems. The project focused on securing critical environments, enhancing network architecture, and supporting the maintenance and hardening of industrial control systems in alignment with industry standards and best practices.

The challenge

The project was conducted within a complex industrial environment where operational continuity and cybersecurity had to be addressed simultaneously. A major challenge was gaining visibility over existing infrastructure by documenting the current architecture and network flows, while identifying opportunities to improve security and system performance.

Additional challenges included troubleshooting and hardening DCS and SCADA systems, managing firewall configurations, coordinating subcontractors, and securing critical applications and infrastructure. The project also required the redesign and hardening of laboratory and video surveillance solutions while ensuring effective communication between IT and OT stakeholders.

The solution

ALTEN provided high-level expertise in industrial automation, SCADA systems, and cybersecurity to support the client’s IT/OT transformation initiative. Our technical approach focused on:

  • Architecture assessment & redesign: We documented the existing (“As-Is”) architecture and designed a future (“To-Be”) architecture to improve system visibility, governance, and cybersecurity readiness.
  • Network & infrastructure management: We developed comprehensive network and flow matrices, managed firewall configuration tables, and supported the implementation of infrastructure improvements across the industrial environment.
  • SCADA & DCS expertise: We provided troubleshooting, maintenance, and hardening support for DeltaV SCADA and DCS systems, ensuring reliable operation of critical industrial assets.
  • Cybersecurity deployment: We implemented industrial cybersecurity best practices, including backup and restore strategies, antivirus management, and system hardening activities aligned with IEC 62443 and the Purdue Model.
  • Operational coordination: We coordinated subcontractors, managed quotation processes, and documented applications and SOPs to support long-term maintainability and operational consistency.

Results & benefits

The project provided a clearer understanding of the industrial environment through comprehensive architecture and network documentation, enabling more effective management of systems and security measures. By implementing hardening activities and cybersecurity best practices, our customer strengthened the security of its operational technology environment while improving system reliability and maintainability. The initiative also enhanced collaboration between IT and OT teams and enabled more structured management of technical suppliers and infrastructure activities.

Key project takeaways

This project highlights the importance of integrating cybersecurity considerations into industrial operations and infrastructure design. By combining expertise in SCADA systems, network architecture, and industrial cybersecurity standards, ALTEN helped establish a stronger foundation for secure and reliable operations. The engagement also demonstrates the value of bridging IT and OT teams to improve visibility, strengthen governance, and support long-term operational resilience.
